Where to start

Wow. It has been a loooong time since my last post and like the title says "where to start". Lets start from my last post. Feb 20011 -we had a really 'snowy' winter and a week of warm weather melting the snow piled high on our roof caused ice dams and we had water coming in a lot of places. We spent the next few weekas contolling water, removing ice dams and waiting to see if more water would come in. In March we called the insurance company, got an adjuster in to check out the damage and spent the next two months living in and out of a hotel while the restoration company fixed our house.

This is where things got complicated. About two weeks after we started our insurance claim my husband got a promotion/transfer to a city 2hrs away and he needed to start there ASAP. So while I was living in a hotel with two little children and looking for a new job, my husband was commuting on the weekends. We were also trying to get our in progress renovations finshed so we could sell the house once the insurance work was completed.
Fast forward a month or two and our little city (and most of the province for that matter) gets hit with a massive flood, some of my friends and coworkers are evacuated from their houses due to risk of dikes breaching and the housing market takes a nose dive. I found a job in the 'big city' and in June we transitioned to our new living quarters in our travel trailer at a campground 50km from the big city. The kids loved living at the campground, they got to swim whenever they felt like it and feed the ducks everyday. Miss O had her 2nd birthday at the campground and there was ample space for the girls run and ride around in their car.

We enjoyed our family time throughout the summer in our less than ideal living quarters while we waited for our house to sell.... and waited...and waited. The flood situation improved, the waters slowly receeded and the giant sandbag dikes finally came down. Things started to look normal again, the housing market never did recover though. In October we moved in with my mom and grandma into their tiny 2 bedroom apartment and hoped for the best. Let me tell you, 6 people in a 2 bdrm apartment is even less ideal than 4 people in a camper. The end of October rolled around and our house finally sold. We moved into our new place the beginning of December and it instantly felt like home.
I am getting used to the big city life. I like the convenience of the bigger and better variety for shopping but still getting used to the traffic and distance to get anyhwere. It used to take me 10min to get from one end of the city to the other, 20 min tops in traffic. Now it takes me 15 min just to get to the grocery store and up to an hour to get to places on the other end of the city. I was stuck in traffic for 45 min the other day comin ghome from a friends' place with 2 cranky kids in the backseat. I guess its something I will eventually get used to, or will I?
I finally pulled out my yarn and crochet hooks and started crocheting again once we got settled. You can check out some of my latest creations on my Facebook Page Crochet By Tracy

Fun with Yarn and Other Creations

It all started when I decided to try cloth diapers with my first DD almost three years ago. I bought a few diapers here and there and was lucky enough to have a mama friend who used cloth with her three kids. She was a great source of information and inexpensive previously loved cloth diapers. Another mama introduced me to wool soakers. She loaned me a few wool items and I decided I needed to dust off my crochet hooks and knitting needles and try to make some for myself.

It had been a long time since I had knit anything, and even longer since I had crocheted. My grandma taught me how to knit when I was 5 or 6 years old. I learned how to crochet when I was 12 years old in 4H. So I went to the thrift store and bought some pure wool, went online and found some free patterns, watched some online tutorials, and 'retaught' myself to knit and crochet.

I made a few soakers, a pair of longies and a skirty for my DD. They weren't perfect, not really pretty, but they were functional....

My very first soaker. It wasn't a very good pattern but it did the trick.

My first knit soaker.

I found I really enjoyed creating things but I was a very slow and awkward knitter, crocheting was a lot easier and faster for me. When I found out baby #2 was on the way, the hooks got put away for a bit and I focused my attention on making some cloth diapers.

My first Made By Me Cloth Diapers

Once I had made enough itty bitty diapers to get us through the first few months I refocused my attention on yarn.

I made some hats and mitts for my daughter and started getting requests from coworkers. I found I could make a bit of money to pay for my supplies and I really enjoyed doing it.

After DD#2 came along I started crocheting more in my 'free time'.

Baby's first hat

It has now been almost 3 years since I retaught myself to crochet and I must say I have learned a lot. I have expanded my skills and have started selling some of the things I make. Most of the money I make goes toward supplies. Eventually I hope to have enough "stock' to put my creations in a craft sale or start an online store, but that is still a dream at this point.

I am at the stage where I use patterns as a guideline and can make modifications to suit my needs fairly easily. I made some hats and baby cocoons for a photographer and she asked if I could make some diaper covers for her. I looked at some free diaper wrap patterns, then considered purchasing a pattern. In the end I was too 'thrifty' to pay $7 for a pattern based on a few online pictures, so I got out some old yarn and started to create. I took a few tries and a lot of unravelling before I was happy with the finished product. Now I had a prototype to work with. After a little tweaking I got out the good yarn and made the finished product. Next on to the hats, They were just a simple earflap hat, modified for itty bitty newborn size, add a stripe to the boy one and some cute little bear ears to the girl one and VOILA, photo props...

Getting with the times.

I used to be to be pretty technicalogically savvy, or so I thought. Then things started getting 'out of date' before they ever became 'cheap' enough for this thrifty girl to even consider purchasing. Now I am so far behind I don't think I will ever catch up. I made a start a few years ago, slowly, very slowly. Social networking was my first big leap into modern communication. Last year I got a laptop and wireless internet in my house and a cell phone that I can text with. Like I said, its a start.
This blog is my next big leap. We will see how it goes....

OK. so a bit about me. I am Tracy. I married my wonderful husband Brent 5yrs ago and we have two beautiful little girls Ava (3/8/07) and Olivia (26/7/09). I am a Licensed Practical Nurse and work on an orthopedic/stroke rehab unit at our local hospital. I just went back to work last week after being on maternity leave for a year. I like my job but really enjoyed staying home with my babies and that first week back to work was harder than I though it would be, especially after living at the lake all summer.

Well enough time wasted, I should really be washing floors or something, but first to clean up the toys yet again so I can find the floor to wash it....
